Grant Program

SALSI solicits applications for its grants programs - Research Enhancement and Innovative Education. The goals of the SALSI grant program are to increase both UTHSCSA's and UTSA's research-funding base with cross campus collaborative programs and to encourage interaction between investigators in support of the acquisition of established extramural, peer-reviewed research funding.

SALSI grants seek to support the development of programmatic/thematic/translational group research efforts between the two campuses. Target areas include, but are not exclusive to: Biomedical Engineering, Health Disparities, Medicinal Chemistry, and Neuroscience. Any area of the Life Sciences will be considered as long as it meets the fundamental criteria outlined below.

SALSI funding program has established two initiatives:
  1. Research Enhancement Fund - Collaborative research grants between UTHSCSA and UTSA in the life sciences
  2. Innovative Education Initiative - joint non-research programs, including joint educational efforts

For the 2009-2010 funding cycle, SALSI expects to fund proposals that are reviewed and scored in the first (1st) quartile of their respective submission round group. Maximum allowable amount to be requested for Research Proposals is $250,000 for a single grant. Total amount that can be requested for Educational or Non-Research Initiative is up to a maximum of $50,000 for a 12 month period.

SALSI project budget allowable costs are intended to be as flexible as possible. Such uses may include (but are not limited to):
  1. Research support (equipment, personnel, supplies) for gathering and assembling preliminary data including potentially technical, doctoral, postdoctoral as well as institutional core research facility support;
  2. Maximum PI salary compensation that can be requested shall be up to the equivalent of two (2) months annual salary;
  3. Institutional commitment for matching funds when required by funding agency;
  4. Faculty recruitment and/or retention if important for the proposed research endeavors (in partnership with Chairs/Deans/Institute or Center or Institute Directors).
  5. Support for planning (technical assistance/ meetings/visits by extramural agencies), organizing, writing and submitting of proposals

Unallowable expenses include F&A (or Indirect Costs) and travel (unless it is related to data acquisition).

Applications must include multiple (2 or more: at least 1 from each institution) interacting investigators with P.I. status from both UTSA and UTHSCSA (from within individual departments, between departments and/or schools). PIs at both institutions must be tenured or on the tenure track. Projects may also include scientific/educational/industrial institutions within the San Antonio and South Texas communities in addition to the two campuses.

No extensions of the termination date of the awards are allowable.

Awards made in response to this grant program will be funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) (Public Law 111-5). As such, awards will include special reporting requirements and other non-standard terms and conditions.
