SALSI Clusters in Research Excellence Award Winners

The Offices of the Vice President for Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) are pleased to announce the grant award for the FY2015 Clusters in Research Excellence. The Clusters in Research Excellence program will develop strategic research clusters at UTSA and UTHSCSA over a 12-month period through collaborative, interdisciplinary research and raise the international research profile and competitiveness of both institutions. Each cluster will receive $300,000 in funding to be divided between the two institutions.

“San Antonio Center for Medical Mycology (SACMM) SALSI Clusters in Research Excellence”

Thomas Patterson, M.D., Professor

UTHSCSA Department of Medicine/Infectious Diseases

Jose Lopez-Ribot, PharmD/Ph.D., Professor

UTSA Department of Biology and South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases

Nathan Wiederhold, PharmD., Professor

UTHSCSA Department of Pathology

Floyd Wormley, Jr. Ph.D., Professor

UTSA Department of Biology and South Texas Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases

The incidence of fungal infections has increased dramatically in recent years, and these infections carry unacceptably high mortality rates. The goal of this cluster is to further the ability of clinicians to diagnose and treat fungal infections. SACMM will work to increase the understanding and identification of fungal species and to develop novel tools for the diagnosis, prevention (i.e. vaccines), and treatment of fungal infections.

“Medical Data Analytics and Visualization Cluster”

Yusheng Feng, Ph.D., Professor

UTSA Department of Mechanical Engineering

John Quarles, Ph.D., Assistant Professor

UTSA Department of Computer Science

Krystel Castillo, Ph.D., Assistant Professor

UTSA Department of Mechanical Engineering

Yufei Huang, Ph.D, Professor

UTSA Department of Electrical Engineering

Craig Sisson, M.D., Assistant Professor/Clinical

UTHSCSA Department of Emergency Medicine

Edward Sako, M.D., Ph.D., Professor

UTHSCSA Department of Surgery

John Calhoon, M.D., Professor and Chair

UTHSCSA Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery

Yidong Chen, Ph.D., Professor

UTHSCSA Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Laura Rosenkranz, M.D., Assistant Professor/Clinical

UTHSCSA Department of Medicine/Gastroenterology

The 12-month goal of this cluster is to establish a complete set of data analytics tools for computation, visualization, and digital patient archives. To do this, the cluster will focus on the challenge of interpreting “big data” in the medical and healthcare fields, for use for discovery, training, and decision-support.

These clusters stand to create new technologies for UTSA and UTHSCSA. Through the grants from SALSI and an interdisciplinary approach to research, these clusters will increase collaboration between both institutions bringing about new treatment options and medical technologies.
