Total maximum amount to be requested is $250,000 for a single grant for a twelve (12) month period.
    Innovative Educational (or Non-Research) Initiatives
Total maximum amount to be requested is $50,000 for a single grant for a twelve (12) month period.

We expect to fund proposals that are reviewed and scored in the first (1st) quartile of their respective submission round group.

Performance Periods: Proposals are for twelve (12) month budget periods. Proposers should factor about three months from the submission date for the start of their periods of performance. We recommend tentative start dates of February 1, 2010 and June 1, 2010 for each submission cycle, respectively.

Application Process and Required Information

Using the Cover Sheet and Checklist as the first page, application forms should be combined into a single PDF document in the order provided in the checklist. Proposals will be submitted electronically - please see Electronic Submission Instructions below.

On the Cover Sheet, please make sure to check the type of proposal (Research or Educational) you are submitting, as well as the target area your proposal falls under.

In addition to the SALSI coversheet and checklist the application requires the following PHS 398 (Rev. 6/2009) forms with their Type Size Requirements. The forms are available from the NIH webpage: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/phs398.html#forms.

Application forms should be completed using the format described below:
  • Form Page 4: Detailed Budget for twelve (12) month Period. Submit a separate budget form for each institution involved (your proposal will have TWO Form Page 4's, one for the UTSA budget and another for the UTHSCSA budget). These budgets should accurately reflect the relative contributions of each campus.

  • Form Page 5: Budget for Entire Proposed Period of Support. Submit a SINGLE combined budget for all institutions involved.

  • Biographical Sketch Format Page - special instructions: On the Biographical Sketch Format Page, section D. Research Support - include award amounts and percent effort in projects.(For a sample biosketch form, click here.)

  • Continuation Pages for the Body of the proposal.
    • Page limits are as follows:
      • Research proposals - up to 10 pages (excluding references)
      • Innovative Educational (Non-Research) proposals - up to 4 pages.
    • Please use 11-point font or larger.
    • For Research proposals specifically, references should be in NIH format with full authors and title.
    • For Educational (Non-Research) proposals specifically, the body of the proposal should describe the rationale and purpose of the proposed program, how it would be implemented, the PIs and participating faculty, and expected outcomes.

  • For Research Proposals ONLY: Continuation Page for special SALSI Issues (2 pages total) to address the following:
    1. Who are the responsible PIs on each campus?
    2. Programmatic/institutional relevance to both campuses
    3. Potential for near-term future extramural funding
    4. Evidence of either current or well planned cross campus collaborations
    5. What unique contribution does this proposal bring to each campus?
    6. How will this funding lead to peer-reviewed funding in the near future? What grant proposals will be submitted, when and to what agencies?
    7. Specific plan for how program will be supported at the end of the 12-month support from SALSI-REF
    8. Specific statement about how expenditure of funds matches with goals of ARRA program
